Internships in Japan for International Students: Routes and Applications

An internship in Japan can turn classroom knowledge into experience: contributing to a research project, learning how a business operates or working with an international team. The most useful placement gives you meaningful work, a supervisor and enough support to settle into an unfamiliar environment.

Start with the kind of experience you want. A laboratory placement, a university exchange and a commercial internship agency offer quite different routes. They also have different eligibility rules, calendars and costs.

Research internships at OIST

Die Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology research internship offers placements lasting four to six months. Eligible applicants include students in the final two years of a bachelor’s degree, master’s students and relevant graduates. Your background needs to fit the research group you hope to join.

The spring 2027 application deadline was 15 October 2026 and has passed. The published deadline for the autumn 2027 round is 15 April 2027, with placements during October 2027 to March 2028. The application currently includes a non-refundable JPY 5,000 fee. Read the current funding and application details before committing.

Japan’s METI internship programme

Die METI Japan Internship Program connects eligible international applicants with Japanese businesses. It is a specific funded programme, not an internship open to every nationality or every student living in Japan. Nationality, residence, age and educational criteria apply.

Applications for the 2026 programme closed on 30 June 2026. Treat the published 2026 information as background while looking for an announced future round; an old application page does not mean applications are open.

University and direct-employer routes

Your university’s international office or careers team is another useful starting point. Ask about existing Japanese partners, research collaborations and placements that previous students have completed. An established relationship can make supervision and practical arrangements easier.

For direct applications, identify a small group of organisations whose work interests you. A focused message explaining your skills, dates and proposed contribution is more helpful than sending the same general request everywhere. Include examples such as a project, portfolio or short description of relevant research.

What will you actually learn?

Before accepting, discuss the work itself. Will you analyse data, assist with a product, observe a team or complete a defined project? Who will review your progress? What working language will colleagues use? An English-language advertisement does not necessarily describe every meeting or social interaction.

Agree on a realistic outcome: a presentation, supervised experiment, portfolio piece or understanding of a particular business process. Ask what you may share publicly afterwards, since commercial and research work may be confidential.

Build a complete budget

Separate the allowance from the costs it covers. Accommodation, flights, local transport, insurance, meals and agency fees can change the value of an offer substantially. Find out when support is paid: reimbursement after arrival still requires money upfront.

If using a placement agency, ask for its actual service, refund conditions and process if a host withdraws. A placement fee is not evidence of a better learning experience.

Plan the move with your host

Use your host and the relevant Japanese consular service to establish the immigration route for your particular activities, duration and payment arrangements. Do this before buying non-refundable travel. Keep time for housing and any university paperwork as well.
