Useful Languages to Learn for Study, Work and Life Abroad

The most useful language to learn is the one you can imagine using regularly. It might help you follow a university lecture, build friendships after moving abroad, speak with customers or understand a part of your family history. Those reasons can matter more than a global list of speaker numbers.

This guide offers ten languages to consider, without pretending they belong in one universal ranking. Language learning takes sustained attention. Choosing something that connects with your real interests gives you more reasons to continue when the early novelty wears off.

Start with the next few years of your life

Write down the countries where you might study or live, the people you want to communicate with and the work you would like to do. Then ask where language is a genuine obstacle. If your chosen degree is taught in English, academic English may be the immediate priority. The local language can still make daily life more independent and social.

Separate your goals. Reading research, giving a presentation and chatting with a neighbour call on different skills. You do not need to be equally advanced in every area before the language becomes useful.

Ten languages worth considering

英语

English is an obvious candidate when your intended degree is taught in it or your future workplace uses it. Focus beyond examination exercises: taking notes, asking for clarification, discussing an argument and writing a clear email are practical academic skills. Cambridge English’s learning activities let you choose practice by level and skill. Our 以英语授课的课程指南 can help you explore how language fits your study choice.

西班牙语

Spanish is particularly useful if Spain or a Spanish-speaking part of the Americas is part of your plans. Even when a degree uses English, Spanish can help with housing, friendships and day-to-day independence. Decide where you expect to use it and become familiar with that setting’s vocabulary and accents. Explore our Spanish immersion guide if you would like a period of focused learning abroad.

法语

French may make sense if you hope to study or work in a French-speaking environment. Look at the language used by your intended institution, workplace and city rather than treating a whole country as linguistically uniform. A useful first goal could be managing everyday tasks; a later one could be following seminars or professional discussions. Your chosen subject can supply the reading and listening material that makes practice interesting.

德国

German is a practical choice for someone planning a longer stay in Germany or another German-speaking setting. It can also broaden the range of courses you can consider beyond English-language options. Goethe-Institut’s intensive programmes are one structured route to investigate. Compare your learning target with the actual language requirements of the course or activity you want to join.

中文普通话

Mandarin may be relevant to plans involving mainland China, Taiwan or Mandarin-speaking communities elsewhere. Give attention to listening and pronunciation alongside characters from the beginning. If you have a particular destination in mind, choose material that reflects its writing conventions and everyday language. A small, usable foundation is more valuable than memorising impressive phrases you cannot recognise in conversation.

Arabic

Arabic can open up study, relationships and cultural interests across many different places. Early on, discuss your goals with a teacher: reading formal texts and speaking in a particular community may lead to different choices about Modern Standard Arabic and regional varieties. That is a planning decision, not a reason to be discouraged. Work towards situations you genuinely want to handle.

葡萄牙语

Portuguese is worth considering if Portugal, Brazil or another Portuguese-speaking setting features in your plans. Choose listening material for the variety you expect to encounter, while remaining curious about others. Camões offers online Portuguese courses with different levels of tutor support. That makes it possible to compare independent study with more regular feedback before committing to travel.

意大利语

Italian may be a rewarding choice for study, everyday life and personal interests in Italy. If your field involves food, design, music or art, you already have possible topics for meaningful reading and conversation. Avoid limiting yourself to specialist vocabulary, though: you will also want the language for arranging appointments, asking questions and building relationships outside your course.

日语

Japanese can help turn an interest in Japan into a more independent experience of living or studying there. Start using simple listening and speaking material while developing reading skills steadily. The Japan Foundation’s Irodori resources organise learning around practical things people do in daily life. That is a useful reminder that a language becomes valuable through small abilities long before you feel fluent.

韩语

Korean may be useful if you are considering study in Korea or want to engage more deeply with people and culture. Online King Sejong Institute offers learning routes including beginner materials. If university is the goal, follow the particular department’s requirements: an English-taught course and a Korean-taught course can ask for different evidence of language ability.

Choose one main language before collecting several

It is tempting to begin three languages at once. For many learners, one main focus is easier to sustain. You can still explore others casually. Give your priority language a regular place in the week, a manageable course and opportunities to use it with people.

Try it for a month before making a large financial commitment. Notice whether you enjoy the material, can access helpful teaching and have reasons to return. Curiosity is not a trivial factor: the language you enjoy using is more likely to become a lasting skill.

Measure usefulness through real tasks

"(《世界人权宣言》) CEFR self-assessment grid describes different areas of language ability. You can also set your own concrete milestones: explain your degree choice, understand a short announcement, arrange accommodation or tell a story without switching languages.

A language does not guarantee a job, admission or a higher salary. It can give you more ways to learn, participate and connect. Choose it alongside your subject interests, experience and circumstances, then make space to use it. For study options, explore our 程序目录.
