Denmark can be an appealing place to study if you enjoy turning ideas into something practical. A design challenge, an engineering project or a question from a real organisation can make learning feel connected to the world beyond the classroom.
The right course matters more than a general impression of the country. English-taught options exist at bachelor’s and master’s level, but their availability, entry requirements and costs vary. This guide helps you compare programmes and plan the everyday side of studying in Denmark.

What would you like to learn?
Start by looking at the work students do during the course. Do they build prototypes, analyse data, develop a business idea, conduct research or collaborate with an organisation? Those experiences can tell you more about a programme than a broad promise of career success.
Think about the learning environment you prefer. Some students enjoy a tightly organised timetable and frequent practical assignments. Others want more independent reading, research and freedom to shape a final project. Ask how teaching and assessment are arranged before choosing.
A degree can also help you discover interests you did not expect. Leave room for electives, clubs and conversations with people from other disciplines. The knowledge you gain and the confidence to use it can be as valuable as the original career plan.
English-taught degrees in Denmark
Search the official Study in Denmark study options and the institution’s own catalogue. Confirm that the entire degree is available in English, including compulsory modules. An English-language website or a few English courses does not establish that.
English-taught bachelor’s options need particularly careful searching. At DTU, for example, General Engineering is its English-taught undergraduate programme, while its other bachelor’s programmes are taught in Danish.
Engineering at DTU
DTU’s General Engineering bachelor’s degree combines scientific foundations with engineering projects. The programme specification gives a duration of three years and 180 ECTS. Design-and-build work is one way students connect mathematics and science with practical problems.
Before applying, compare your school subjects with the programme’s admission requirements. English evidence and the required subject levels are separate parts of the application.
Computing at Aarhus University
Aarhus University’s Computer Science master’s degree is a two-year English-taught route with opportunities to specialise and develop a substantial thesis. Its Applied Computer Science programme offers a different structure: one year and 75 ECTS, including project work.
These examples show why it is worth comparing the actual duration and curriculum. Two master’s degrees in a related field may offer very different schedules, depth and project experiences. Check the intake and eligibility for the version you want to pursue.
For broader comparisons, see our guides to 工程学, 计算 和 英语授课的课程.
申请和入学要求
官方 application guidance explains the undergraduate process through Optagelse.dk. Applicants with foreign school qualifications generally work towards the 15 March, 12 noon CET deadline. Check the published call for your intake and any separate requirements attached to your qualification.
Undergraduate applications can include up to eight prioritised choices. Read the ordering instructions carefully and put genuine thought into the programmes you would accept. Master’s applications generally follow the university’s own process and calendar.
For each shortlisted course, record the following:
- Required prior qualifications and subject levels.
- Accepted English evidence and any relevant exemptions.
- The application deadline and document deadlines.
- Any test, interview, portfolio or additional selection task.
- Tuition, scholarship and offer-acceptance dates.
Do not assume that a degree title alone demonstrates the subject preparation needed for a master’s. Your transcript and module descriptions may be important. If you have relevant professional experience, explain how it connects with the course without assuming that it replaces academic prerequisites.
Where a personal statement is requested, make it specific. Describe a project or experience that led you towards the subject and what you hope to explore next. There is no need to turn it into a grand life story; clarity and genuine interest are more useful.
Tuition fees: use the exact programme price
At public institutions, students from the EU/EEA and Switzerland are generally exempt from tuition. Other international full-degree students usually pay, with exemptions depending on their circumstances. The national tuition guidance is a starting point, followed by the institution’s assessment of your fee category.
A broad national range can hide meaningful differences between programmes. Two current examples illustrate this:
- DTU General Engineering: 它的 fees page lists €15,000 per year, paid as €7,500 per semester, for fee-paying students.
- SDU Mechanical Engineering in Sønderborg: 该 programme’s published information lists €17,300 per year for students liable for non-EU/EEA tuition.
These are prices available when this guide was reviewed, not a guarantee for every future cohort. Confirm the fee, payment schedule and total duration in your own offer.
Calculate the complete degree cost. A shorter programme may reduce the number of months of living expenses, while a longer programme may offer more time for projects and exploration. Compare both the financial and educational value.
Scholarships and other support
官方 scholarship information describes limited Danish government scholarships administered by institutions for eligible non-EU/EEA students. Awards may cover tuition, living support or a combination, depending on the scheme.
Availability is programme-specific. DTU’s General Engineering fees page, for example, states that it does not offer undergraduate tuition waivers or scholarships. Funding available elsewhere should not be assumed to apply to that degree.
Ask what an award covers, how long it lasts and whether there are conditions for continuation. A partial tuition reduction can be valuable, but it does not automatically solve the housing and living budget.
Search relevant home-country funding and employer support too. Use our 奖学金中心 to organise possibilities, and follow the awarding organisation’s official call for the actual application.
Living costs and arrival money
Denmark uses the Danish krone, or DKK. Some universities publish tuition in euros, so keep tuition and everyday costs clearly labelled in your budget. Exchange rates and bank charges can affect what you actually pay from another currency.
For planning, the following are illustrative scenarios rather than city averages, excluding tuition:
- DKK 9,000 per month: DKK 108,000 over twelve months.
- DKK 12,000 per month: DKK 144,000 over twelve months.
- DKK 15,000 per month: DKK 180,000 over twelve months.
Replace these totals with actual rent, utilities, groceries, transport, insurance, phone and personal spending. If you will remain through the summer, include those months even when teaching has finished.
Arrival costs deserve their own line. The official housing guidance explains that a rental can involve a deposit of up to three months’ rent and up to three months of prepaid rent. The amount depends on the contract, but it can create a substantial initial payment alongside the first rent.
Do not confuse prepaid rent with a refundable deposit. Read how each amount is used, and ask what happens at the end of the tenancy. Add travel, essential household items and a contingency fund to the money you need before arrival.
Finding a home and choosing a city
Use the university’s housing advice early. A university offer does not necessarily include a room, and accommodation processes can operate on a different timetable from admission.
Compare the complete rental arrangement: furniture, bills, contract duration, deposit and commute. A slightly higher rent near campus may be worthwhile if it reduces transport costs and gives you more time for study and activities.
Copenhagen, Aarhus, Odense and Sønderborg are different settings for student life. The best choice depends on the course, available housing and the routine you would enjoy. Avoid choosing on city reputation alone when a programme elsewhere fits your interests more closely.
If you are arranging housing remotely, verify the person or provider and read the written agreement before paying. Ask your university’s housing team when an offer seems unclear. A little preparation can save considerable stress in the first weeks.
Residence permission and proof of funds
Students who need a study residence permit should use New to Denmark’s higher education guidance. EU/EEA and Swiss citizens should follow their applicable residence route.
Where evidence of self-support is required, the published 2026 amount is DKK 7,426 per month, up to twelve months, or DKK 89,112. The guidance explains circumstances in which paid tuition can affect the evidence required. Follow the instructions for your application rather than simply adding a generic bank-balance figure.
The immigration amount is not a forecast of your rent and spending. Your personal budget may be higher, particularly when deposits and travel are included. Check the applicable amount again for a later application year.
你能同时学习工作吗?
For qualifying students on state-approved higher education programmes, the current student work allowance 是 90 hours per calendar month from September to May, with full-time work allowed in June, July and August.
This is a monthly allowance, not the older general advice of 20 hours every week. Other programme and permit categories can have different rights, so check the conditions attached to your own permission.
Finding a job depends on language, experience, location and available hours. Do not build the tuition and rent budget around employment you have not secured. Learning Danish can make more situations accessible, even if your degree is entirely in English.
Practical experience can also come from coursework, a student organisation, a placement or a project with an external partner. Ask how these opportunities are organised and what support students receive in finding them.
Making the most of the experience
Join activities that give you a reason to meet people regularly. A project group, sports club, language exchange or shared interest can be easier to sustain than relying on occasional large social events.
Keep examples of the work you produce and reflect on what you contributed. A prototype, analysis, design or presentation can help you explain your skills later. Ask for permission before sharing material involving an external organisation or other people’s work.
Be open to changing direction as you learn. A course may introduce you to a field or type of work you had not considered. The ability to ask good questions, collaborate and apply knowledge travels well beyond one country or job title.
毕业后
Eligible graduates of specified state-approved degrees can receive a job-seeking residence period of up to three years. The 官方研究生指导 explains the categories and conditions. Work rights during that period need to be checked separately.
If staying in Denmark interests you, explore employers, projects and language learning during the degree. That gives you time to discover which opportunities suit you rather than making the entire decision after graduation.
