What happens to pollutants after they enter an ecosystem, and how can their effects be understood? This English-taught master’s connects environmental chemistry, biology and toxicology, with teaching at the University of the Basque Country and Plentzia Marine Station.

From environmental questions to research
The programme examines pollutant behaviour, biological responses and approaches to environmental recovery. Its syllabus combines four compulsory credits, 36 optional credits and a substantial 20-credit final project.
Optional study lets you build a direction around environmental contamination or toxicology. Think about the environments and methods that interest you: working with chemical measurements, exploring biological responses or investigating the condition of marine and terrestrial ecosystems.
This is the one-year, 60-credit programme, not the separate two-year Erasmus Mundus ECT+ course.
Bringing your previous experience
O admission guidance lists backgrounds including biology, chemistry, environmental science, marine science, biochemistry and related fields. Other degrees may be considered. Laboratory experience, motivation, references and academic work contribute to assessment.
Describe the work you have enjoyed and what you would like to learn next. Experience from university projects can be a useful part of that story.
Planning your year
Ask how the timetable is shared between Leioa and Plentzia before committing to accommodation. The university admissions calendar is the place to check application rounds; the published 2026/27 dates have passed.
