Universities in India for International Students: Finding Your Course

India offers a wide range of study settings, from science and engineering campuses to institutions teaching business, arts and social sciences. The most useful choice begins with what you want to learn, the course structure and the support available to international students.

Use Study in India as a starting point

The government’s Study in India portal brings together institutions, courses and international-student registration. Its current guidance describes an SII student ID as part of the foreign-student process. Follow the portal and university’s instructions for your category and intended intake.

The portal also distinguishes institution-provided scholarships and fee waivers from its own role. Do not assume registration automatically produces a scholarship or admission.

Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru

IISc’s 2026 undergraduate selection page describes the four-year Bachelor of Science (Research) and separate routes for different applicant categories. For foreign-national and relevant OCI applicants, it lists SAT/ACT and specified Indian examination routes with their conditions. This is dated intake information: applicants for a later year should use the new cycle’s instructions when published.

A research-oriented science programme is worth considering if you enjoy investigating questions deeply and building a strong scientific foundation. Read the subject requirements and curriculum, not just the institution’s reputation.

IIT Delhi

IIT Delhi’s international relations office provides international admissions information and reminds foreign students to register through Study in India before applying for a student visa. Explore the specific degree and department, since undergraduate, taught postgraduate and research applications follow different requirements.

For research, look at the work of the relevant group and the supervision available. For taught study, compare projects, course choices and the balance between theory and application.

Look beyond a famous-name shortlist

The national portal can help you explore institutions in different regions and subjects. A university that offers the right modules, practical experience and support may be a stronger fit than a better-known institution whose course does not match your interests.

Ask where teaching takes place, how large classes are and what facilities students actually use. For creative or practical subjects, examples of student work can be more informative than general claims about excellence.

Language and admissions

Confirm the language of lectures, assessment, placements and project work for the exact programme. An English-language prospectus is not enough to establish every part of the student experience. Language support and opportunities to learn locally can both enrich your stay.

Follow the admission instructions for your nationality, previous education and degree level. Avoid copying an application route intended for a different category. Prepare transcripts and any required test results, portfolio, proposal or references early.

Build a complete budget

Request the international-student fee schedule for the intended year, noting whether the quote is in rupees or another currency and whether it covers a semester or the full course. Add accommodation, meals, insurance, transport, study materials and travel.

Ask about campus housing availability and deposits. If funding is offered, clarify its coverage and renewal conditions. A tuition waiver can be valuable without paying all living expenses, and advertised support should not be treated as confirmed until awarded.

Make room for the experience

University life can build friendships, confidence and a wider understanding of the world alongside specialist knowledge. Explore societies, practical projects and the surrounding community when comparing courses.
