Choosing a high school in Barcelona is partly an educational decision and partly a neighbourhood decision. A teenager’s day will be shaped by their classes, friendships and activities, but also by the journey between home and campus. Some schools serving Barcelona are outside the city itself.
Start by comparing the subjects and support your child needs. Then explore the locations. The examples below are a practical shortlist, not a league table.
American School of Barcelona
Le American School of Barcelona describes a US high-school diploma alongside IB Diploma, individual IB certificate and IB Career-related routes. The Career-related Programme was introduced in September 2025. These choices can appeal to students with different academic interests; ask which pathway and subject combinations are available for your child’s entry year.
A family moving from an American school should discuss how completed credits transfer. A family coming from another system should ask how the school places students and helps them adapt to assessment and coursework.
École internationale Benjamin Franklin
BFIS offers a US high-school diploma with the option of the IB Diploma in Grades 11 and 12. Discuss the balance of subjects, English-language support and the transition into the final two years. Look beyond examination results to the activities and classroom atmosphere that will help your teenager participate confidently.
L'école britannique de Barcelone
BSB’s pre-university information describes A Levels and the IB Diploma. IB is offered at BSB Nexus in Castelldefels and BSB City in Barcelona. Confirm the campus for the pathway you want: a school group’s name is not a substitute for an address and timetable.
A Levels may appeal to a student ready to concentrate on a smaller set of subjects. IB can appeal to someone who wants to maintain breadth. Neither choice removes the importance of enjoying the subjects and receiving good teaching.
Questions about languages
Ask which language is used in each subject and how Spanish and Catalan feature in the school week. The answer may differ between newcomers and established pupils. A supportive English-speaking environment can ease the first months, while meaningful opportunities to learn local languages help a child make the most of living here.
If your teenager needs English support, ask how the school assesses their needs and how that support fits around the main curriculum. If they are already multilingual, discuss opportunities to maintain their strongest language as well.
Campus, commute and friendships
Map a normal school day rather than an ideal weekend journey. Include the school bus, transfers and the return after clubs. Ask where classmates tend to live and whether there are practical ways to meet outside school. A move to a beautiful coastal neighbourhood can still feel isolating if all friends live far away.
On a visit, let the student ask about lunch, sport, music and how new arrivals are welcomed. Look for evidence of a community they can join, not simply facilities they will admire once.
Costs and applications
Request the current fee schedule for the exact year group, including enrolment, meals, transport, devices, examinations and language support. Ask about withdrawal notice and the payment schedule before committing to a house move. Fees on older comparison websites may refer to a different age group or year.
Bring recent reports, details of subjects already studied and any information about learning support. If the move falls midway through a two-year examination course, discuss the practical options with both schools before assuming an immediate transfer is straightforward.
What to compare after visiting
Write down three things your teenager liked and three questions that remain. Compare curriculum, commute, support and total cost on the same page. A clear shortlist is more useful than a long collection of schools whose programmes or locations would never work for your family.
