Hungary offers English-taught study in a variety of fields, from computing and engineering to business, social sciences and health. Budapest is an obvious starting point, but the university towns of Pécs, Szeged and Debrecen also deserve attention. Your choice should come down to what you want to learn, the way the course is taught and the life you can realistically afford around it.
A good Hungarian shortlist does not need to be long. Three carefully researched programmes, each with a clear budget and an achievable application route, will tell you much more than a list of twenty institution names. Explore the curriculum, ask questions about practical work, and allow yourself to compare a capital-city experience with a smaller student community.
English-taught bachelor’s and master’s programmes
The national Study in Hungary portal provides a useful introduction to the system and programme search. Hungary offers both separate bachelor’s and master’s degrees and longer, integrated courses in particular subjects. Medicine, for example, should not be compared with a short postgraduate programme simply because both lead to an advanced qualification.
Check the language on the exact programme page. Preparatory study, individual English-language modules and a full English-taught degree are different products. If a foundation course is suggested, ask what successful completion allows you to progress to and whether a further selection step remains.
For a concrete example, Eötvös Loránd University’s Computer Science BSc is taught in English and lists six semesters and 180 ECTS. Its approach combines a theoretical foundation with skills for software and information systems. ELTE also lists an English-taught Applied Economics BSc of the same duration, with an emphasis on understanding decisions through economic reasoning and quantitative methods. These illustrate how different subjects can offer distinct learning experiences within one university.
Choosing the city and institution
Budapest provides a large-city setting with several universities and a broad cultural life. Smaller cities can offer a more concentrated student environment and shorter everyday journeys. Avoid assuming one city will be cheaper for you before you compare actual accommodation offers.
Identify the faculty’s address, not only the main university address. Some institutions teach across several campuses. A room close to a transport interchange may suit you better than one in a popular entertainment neighbourhood, particularly if your timetable includes early laboratories or long studio sessions.
When speaking to current students, ask about an ordinary week: contact hours, group work, assessment, library space and access to lecturers. These details will help you imagine your own experience more accurately than general claims about prestige or nightlife.
Tuition fees and budgeting
Self-funded international students should expect programme-specific tuition. There is no reliable single fee for “studying in Hungary”, and medical or other specialist programmes can be very different from social-science degrees. The national tuition and funding guidance directs students to their chosen institution for exact prices.
Check the currency and payment period. A semester fee in euros or US dollars cannot be compared directly with a yearly figure in Hungarian forints. Ask about application and entrance-examination charges, instalments, the cost of repeating a module, and the refund terms if you cannot start.
Your budget should include housing, bills, groceries, local transport, insurance, a phone, study materials and visits home. Add a separate arrival allowance for deposits and essentials. If you receive a scholarship, subtract only what it actually pays; do not assume a living contribution covers your full monthly spending.
Stipendium Hungaricum and other funding
Stipendium Hungaricum is an important scholarship route, but eligibility depends on the current call, your sending partner or country, study level and available subjects. Successful awards can include tuition support and contributions toward living and accommodation costs. Those contributions should not be interpreted as a guarantee that every expense is covered.
The 2026–2027 call had a January 2026 application deadline; by October 2026 it is a past round, not an invitation to apply immediately. Use the official site for the next published call and avoid copying last year’s deadline into your plan. University admission and scholarship selection may involve different steps.
Also investigate institution-specific awards and relevant exchange funding. Our 奖学金目录 can help with discovery, while the provider’s current call should determine eligibility and submission dates.
Applying and preparing academically
Expect to provide evidence of your previous education and the English standard requested by the course. Depending on the subject, selection may include an interview, subject examination, portfolio or assessment of earlier study. Master’s applicants should read prerequisite requirements closely: a related degree title does not always show whether you have studied the necessary mathematics, programming or laboratory material.
Prepare a short explanation of why you want the course and which topics interest you. For a research-oriented master’s, look at potential supervision and the kind of final project students complete. If your academic background has a gap, ask whether preparatory modules are available rather than assuming you must abandon the subject.
Residence, student work and opportunities
Immigration requirements depend on nationality and residence status. The Hungarian immigration authority’s student residence guidance explains the current route. For third-country nationals holding the relevant study residence permission, it currently describes employment up to 30 hours a week during the study period and full-time work for up to 90 days a year outside it. Check the conditions attached to your own permission.
Permission to work does not produce a job offer. Hungarian-language ability, the timetable and local demand can affect what is available. Plan to fund your studies without depending on immediate employment, and use work as additional experience where possible.
Careers services, student societies, research projects and employer events can help you develop contacts. Ask whether an internship is required, optional or something you arrange independently. The value comes from what you learn and contribute, not from simply having the word “internship” on your schedule.
