Biology increasingly produces more data than a person can interpret by eye. Bioinformatics brings computing and mathematics into that picture, helping researchers investigate living systems through data. This English-taught joint degree is coordinated by UPC, with UB, UAB and UPF participating.

Building both sides of the subject
The study plan starts with subjects such as applied programming, cell biology, algebra and chemistry. Later work includes genetics, databases, statistical learning and computational genomics. The bachelor’s thesis carries 24 credits.
This combination may appeal if you enjoy both the questions of biology and the problem-solving involved in code. You do not need to choose between those interests when exploring your options, but it helps to compare how much time different degrees devote to laboratory science, mathematics and computing.
The current FIB syllabus identifies which subjects are offered in the academic year. It is a useful place to begin imagining your weekly work and the topics you could develop later.
A joint degree in Barcelona
FIB is the coordinating school and UPC also lists ETSETB as a teaching location. Because several universities participate, confirm the locations of your timetable before choosing accommodation. Our Guida pentru Barcelona covers neighbourhoods, housing and transport.
Fees and admissions
The figures above are the course page’s displayed annual estimates. Ask which category applies to your situation, then add rent and everyday expenses to make a complete budget.
Entry follows the relevant university access and Catalan pre-enrolment route for your previous education. The UPC admissions guide explains where to start. The 2026/27 new-student enrolment dates have passed; look for the next cycle’s dates before making plans.
