Looking beyond the most familiar study-abroad cities can open up interesting subjects, learning environments and communities. A less obvious destination is not automatically cheaper, easier to enter or better for your career. Its value comes from finding a course and a place that suit the experience you want.
This selection revisits ten destinations from our earlier guide. It is an editorial exploration, not a ranking or a prediction of which cities will attract the most students. Some offer clear English-taught degree routes; others are better starting points for exchange, language study or a particular academic interest.

1. Tallinn, Estonia: technology and digital society
Tallinn is worth exploring if you are curious about technology in everyday institutions and businesses. Tallinn University of Technology’s English-taught catalogue includes options across technology, engineering, business and governance. Read the level and curriculum carefully: the same subject is not necessarily offered in English at both bachelor’s and master’s level.
The useful question is how a course connects theory with projects and laboratory work. Look for the skills you will practise and the support available to international students. Estonia’s digital reputation is an interesting backdrop, not a promise of an internship or a job. Read more in our Estonia guide.
2. Valparaíso, Chile: Spanish and an exchange experience
Valparaíso offers a different kind of starting point: an opportunity to study within a Spanish-speaking university community. Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso describes semester exchanges, Spanish-language study, short summer programmes and business-internship options.
Some English-taught courses are available within its international offering, but that does not make the full university catalogue English-taught. Build an actual timetable with the international office and your home university. Consider how much Spanish you need to participate comfortably in the academic and social experience.
3. Kigali, Rwanda: project-based study with an African perspective
African Leadership University provides a concrete place to begin researching Kigali. Its degree offering includes software engineering and entrepreneurial leadership. The software-engineering programme describes English as the language of instruction and combines technical learning with broader problem-solving.
Investigate delivery arrangements, campus attendance and the programme’s current structure before picturing a conventional residential degree. Think about the kind of projects and communities you want to engage with, and ask for the complete cost of the study route offered to you.
4. Tbilisi, Georgia: English-study options in a capital city
Tbilisi may interest students looking at business, computing or other internationally oriented programmes. The University of Georgia’s programme catalogue identifies several English-language options. Compare the actual subject, level and curriculum instead of choosing a course just because its title is in English.
The university has a separate international tuition page. This matters because fees aimed at applicants taking Georgian national examinations are not automatically the fees for overseas students. Check the intake and written total before making a budget.
5. Da Nang, Vietnam: distinguish bilingual and English routes
Da Nang offers an appealing setting for students interested in Vietnam and the wider region, but language needs careful attention. The University of Danang’s published international admission guidance distinguishes programmes by teaching language and directs applicants to the relevant training institution. That page currently describes the 2025 admission cycle, so request the applicable guidance for your intended intake.
For example, the Vietnam–Korea University of Information and Communication Technology labels certain programmes bilingual English–Vietnamese. Bilingual is not the same as entirely English. Request the module-level language arrangements and any Vietnamese preparation before deciding whether a full degree or a shorter exchange fits.
6. Gdańsk, Poland: engineering with a coastal setting
Gdańsk University of Technology lists English-medium bachelor’s options including architecture, data engineering and green technologies for 2026/27. Its catalogue gives programme-specific duration and fee information, making it a useful place to start an informed comparison.
Check intake conditions: the university notes that programmes need enough candidates to commence. Look at the balance between technical foundations, design work and projects, then compare housing and transport for your teaching location. Our Poland guide offers broader context.
7. Kochi, India: science and technology in context
Cochin University of Science and Technology is a starting point for investigating study in Kochi. Its current admissions portal provides programme information, the 2026 prospectus and fee guidance. Prefer the current prospectus over older international pages when the figures or procedures differ.
Ask the department about the language of your actual course, laboratory work, assessment and international-student entry route. A university’s broad subject strengths do not establish that every programme is available to every applicant. Our India study guide helps frame the wider decision.
8. Cartagena, Colombia: a Spanish-speaking exchange community
Universidad Tecnológica de Bolívar welcomes international exchange students in Cartagena and describes academic and practical support. This is an option to explore if you want to combine university study with a deeper experience of a Spanish-speaking environment.
Το exchange guidance lists proof of Spanish proficiency, with B1 or B2 preferred. Discuss the courses you can actually take and the language needed for them. Do not assume an international exchange is an English-only semester.
9. Auckland, New Zealand: broad study choices, substantial planning
Auckland is an established destination rather than a newly discovered one, but remains an alternative for students whose first shortlist centres on Europe. The University of Auckland publishes programme-specific application dates και international undergraduate fees.
Compare full-year costs, student-service charges, housing and the journey from home. The academic calendar may differ from your current school or university. Read our New Zealand guide before deciding how the timing and distance fit your plans.
10. Riga, Latvia: technical study and an international classroom
Τεχνικό Πανεπιστήμιο της Ρίγα publishes English-study information and links to its programme offer. Its catalogue allows you to compare subjects and levels rather than relying on broad claims about a destination.
RTU operates across more than one campus, so confirm the city for the specific course. Review tuition category, intake, project work and accommodation together. Riga may offer a different scale of city life from larger European capitals, but the right comparison is your actual study budget and preferred routine. Continue with our Latvia guide.
Turn inspiration into a workable shortlist
For each place, identify a real programme or exchange route, establish its teaching language and list the complete costs. Compare academic content, support and housing before making travel arrangements. Use official admission and immigration guidance for your nationality and intended length of stay; promotional destination descriptions cannot answer those questions.
Start with our programme directory και English-taught study guide. A rewarding destination is one where you can participate fully in the learning and the community, with a plan that works financially and practically.
