Studying in Malaysia: English-Taught Degrees, Costs and Student Life

Malaysia can suit students who want an English-speaking academic environment alongside the experience of living in Southeast Asia. The choice extends beyond one university model: you can compare Malaysian universities, private institutions and overseas universities with Malaysian campuses. The useful question is which particular course offers the teaching, projects and support you want.

Start with the subject you enjoy, then compare the campus and total cost. A degree advertised under an international university name is still a local experience: your accommodation, classmates, timetable and opportunities will depend on where you actually study.

Finding a degree taught in English

Education Malaysia Global Services (EMGS) says English is widely used in Malaysian higher education. That is a helpful starting point, but confirm the language for the complete programme, including compulsory modules, assessments and any clinical or professional placement. An English website does not by itself establish the teaching language.

Το Monash University Malaysia undergraduate catalogue illustrates the range available, including business, arts and social sciences, computing, engineering, science and health-related subjects. It also distinguishes broad degrees, specialised courses, double degrees and honours study. These are different learning choices, not interchangeable labels.

Someone interested in computing, for example, should compare the balance of programming, mathematics, data work and practical projects. A business applicant might prefer a broad introduction before specialising. At master’s level, ask whether the course is primarily taught, research-led or a combination, and what preparation it assumes.

Compare the actual campus

University life in central Kuala Lumpur will feel different from a campus outside the city. Put the teaching address into your housing search before judging a rental price. A cheaper room can become less convenient if every class involves an expensive or time-consuming commute.

Ask how much learning happens in laboratories, studios, seminars or group projects, and whether those facilities are available outside scheduled classes. If an overseas semester interests you, find out whether it is optional, competitive or built into the course, and whether a move changes tuition and living costs.

Practical experience also deserves a close look. Monash Malaysia describes an assessed industry-placement option for eligible IT students, for example. Opportunities of that kind can be valuable, but eligibility and selection matter. Do not assume every student on every course receives the same placement.

Tuition fees and the cost of the whole degree

There is no single international tuition fee for Malaysia. Compare each institution’s fee schedule for your course, nationality category and entry year. Find out whether the amount covers a semester, an academic year or the full programme.

Το University of Nottingham Malaysia fee schedule separates Malaysian and international fees and explains its conditions for fixing undergraduate tuition at the entry-year rate. It also flags a 6% Sales and Service Tax for non-Malaysian citizens from 1 July 2025. Check the current quotation rather than adding or assuming away taxes yourself.

Your comparison should include application charges, student-pass processing, medical screening, insurance, equipment and travel. Where a course permits transfer to another country, price that option separately. A Malaysian-campus budget will not automatically cover an Australian or UK semester.

A realistic living budget

Build the budget from accommodation you could actually book. Include utilities, internet, food, local transport, mobile service, laundry and a small contingency. Air-conditioning and transport habits can change day-to-day spending, while a deposit and initial purchases make the first month more expensive than later months.

Ask the institution for its latest accommodation prices and whether residence contracts cover holidays. Compare a room near campus with university housing on the same basis: meals included, room sharing, utility allowance and journey time. Our tuition and budgeting guide helps separate recurring living expenses from one-off arrival costs.

Applications, English and intake dates

Academic requirements depend on your qualification and chosen subject. Mathematics or science prerequisites can be important even when your overall school results are strong. For a master’s course, compare the required bachelor’s background and any work-experience expectations before preparing an application.

Check English-test requirements at both admission and student-pass stages. EMGS publishes the accepted evidence in its document guidance. An institutional waiver should not be assumed to settle every immigration requirement.

There is no universal Malaysian intake calendar. Make a timeline for the actual course, allowing time for documents, an offer, acceptance, student-pass processing and accommodation. Ask whether a later intake follows the same curriculum and provides the same module choices.

Student passes, work and scholarships

Χρησιμοποιήστε το Malaysian Immigration Department’s student-pass guidance alongside EMGS and your institution’s international office. Admission and permission to enter or remain are separate steps. Follow the current instructions about when and where to submit the application.

Student work is conditional, requires the relevant approval and is restricted to permitted activities. Published EMGS and immigration guidance describe the conditions differently in places, so obtain current written guidance through your university before accepting work. Do not build a funding plan around an assumed term-time job.

Scholarships may come from an institution or a particular scheme. Check nationality, academic requirements, coverage and renewal conditions. A tuition reduction does not necessarily pay rent or visa costs. Compare options in our Διαδικτυακός κατάλογος υποτροφιών, then verify the provider’s current call.

Making the choice

Shortlist courses that fit your interests, compare their teaching and full cost, and speak to the admissions team about the details you cannot find. Malaysia’s appeal is the combination of study and a varied cultural setting; choose a course that gives you a reason to be there beyond a low headline price. Use our programme finder και English-taught degree guide to organise the comparison.
